AWCA offers a full range of classes for those who want to learn how to carve and for those who want to develop their skills and ability to create a more detailed or intricate carving. These classes generally run through the fall and winter months.
The wildlife carving classes are presented over a period of time, usually from the fall until the following spring.
Classes include a welcoming introductory class for first time and novice carvers of all ages. They will learn tool usage, and how to use patterns to guide them as they create their wildlife carvings. As carvers progress in knowledge and skill they will be given the opportunity to take more advanced classes and learn techniques in texturing, burning and painting their projects.
You would be welcomed at an AWCA Beginner Class. They are designed to teach a new carver how to use tools, patterns, and templates to find the bird or animal hiding in the wood blank you receive.
The AWCA has kits that are available for rent for first time carvers. The kits contain all the tools you will need to work on your project. The equipment (brushes and/or paint) required to paint your bird/animal is the responsibility of the carver. Please discuss these details with your instructor as options
First time carvers may rent a kit. The rental fee is $50.00. There is also a damage deposit of $50.00 which is returned to the carver if no damage has occurred or items missing.
This will vary from class to class. The instructor provides the wood blank, patterns, glass eyes, material for creating feet (if needed). Additional materials may be required at an additional cost; however this should be discussed with your instructor.
Classes are scheduled over a period of time. It is not unusual for a student to miss a class or two for a variety of reasons. In this circumstance the instructor helps the student catch up when they are back in class.
The AWCA provides dust collectors and lights for students in classes. These are part of the benefits of being a member.
