I have been a member of the AWCA for a number of years and am totally impressed with the direction the Association takes. From the regular weekly classes to the annual classes put on by the likes of artists like Pat Godin. He and other artists brought in by the Association advance the progress of local carvers. The weekly carving classes are led by a group of talented local instructors and if you are looking for advice, many of the local carvers are able to provide it. Not many provinces have access to the talents provided by AWCA.

I learned about the AWCA from some of its members whom I met at the World Competition in Ocean City, Maryland.  Our friendships were born of our mutual love of the art of wildfowl carving and it grew when I was asked to travel to Alberta, to teach classes for them.  I have taught numerous classes over the past years and have judged their “Images of Nature” competition.  I have been most impressed by the professionalism, attention to detail and strong sense of community that I have experienced in all of my interactions with the people who organize and make up the AWCA.  Thank you so much for all you have done for me, what you do for each other and for the art form we all love……wildfowl carving

My first carving was a Chickadee with the patient instructor Kathleen Norton. When she showed the class what the finished project would look like, all I remember thinking “does basswood burn nice in a campfire?” To my surprise I did turn a piece of wood into something lifelike. Glenn Maber was doing a Full Size Sharp-Shined Hawk. In a group with experienced carvers not only Glenn but the group helped me to create an amazing hawk. Off to Country Haven Carving Studio I go. Brenda Mitchell runs an all-day class out at her Studio with the support and resources of AWCA. Otters, moose, birds….

The AWCA has and continues to be the only place that focuses solely on teaching the craft and art of wildlife carving in Alberta. Thru hands-on instruction with talented and dedicated instructors the AWCA can teach anyone to turn a block of wood into an actual representation of a wildlife species. The AWCA then encourages its members to compete in their annual spring carving competition in which carvings are judged in the spirit of learning and continuous improvement. I have been a member of the AWCA since 2019 and have not only learned to carve but fostered new friendships.
